Opting to Adopt a Horse

Q: With so many horses on the market, why should I adopt from People Helping Horses?

A: The ultimate goal of our program is to find forever, loving homes for our horses. Health and happiness go hand in hand, and nowhere is a horse happier than by the side of a beloved owner. Some horses will be great riding horses while others will make excellent companions.

Rescuing a horse is a calculated risk, but one we feel is well worth taking. Our horses have endured so much in their lives, that to see them upon entry into our program, one cannot help but wonder if they’ll ever find peace. They can and they will, in your home. And the rewards? There’s no love like that given by a rescue horse. Adopting a rescue horse is much more than buying a horse. It’s a heroic act that speaks to your courage and commitment—and one that saves a life.

Q: What do I need to do in order to adopt a horse from PHH?

A:Potential adopters will meet with our horse adoption coordinator to discuss what their expectations are for their new family member. Relying on our intimate knowledge of the horses in our care, suitable matches will be introduced. Prior to adoption, both the horse and their potential owner will spend a reasonable amount of time together to ensure that their personalities and lifestyles are compatible. Lastly, a PHH representative will visit the potential home in order to determine whether it is a safe environment.

Once an adoption contract is signed, we will perform periodic checkups on the horse. Their health, safety, and happiness will be evaluated. The PHH representative will check the premises for a pasture companion, safe fencing, shelter, and a reliable water source. The horse’s weight will be reviewed and up to date vet and farrier records will be required.

We will make a final site visit one year after the horse has been released into the adopter’s care. If all the above requirements are met, the adoption will be finalized with and a bill of sale will be issued. We encourage adopters to keep in contact with us and provide pictures and updates after the horse adoption has been finalized. PHH will retain ownership of the horse until the full year is up and the final review is complete.

Q: Are there any adoption fees involved?
A: Yes, each horse has an adoption fee based on a number of factors including training and skill level. The PHH Horse Adoption Coordinator will share this information with you when you come to the barn and meet our horses.

Q: Does the PHH adoption contract include a no breeding clause?

A: At this time, our adoption contract does not include a no breeding clause. However, we would encourage you to remember that, at this time, the horse market is experiencing great difficulties much the same as our country’s economic crisis. There simply are too many horses and not enough buyers. Your decision to adopt a horse from us should be based on what you can do for the horse, not what the horse can financially do for you. We strongly recommend that any horse adopted from our program not be used for breeding.

Q: Who do I talk to about adopting from PHH?

A: Whoa horsey! First, please take a look at those horses in our care who are ready for adoption.

Then contact our Adoption Coordinator to arrange a time for you to meet our horses.
