Frank was surrendered to animal control by an owner who had previously been charged with 2nd degree animal cruelty. He was very thin and malnourished and had been living in poor conditions. Frank has great ground manners and would make a good pasture companion. He is very gentle and loves to roll in the mud!
Update 10/27/08: Frank, now renamed Captain, was placed with a wonderful woman on Lopez Island. Here’s what his new owner had to say about Captain’s progress:
He is so wonderful! He has become quite mellow with me and allows me to halter him easily.
I was out of the country for six weeks late in late July/August. I thought Captain would forget me, but no, he just seemed to remember me fine and let me put his halter on him so nicely.
Today, a young man that helps around here came by with his wife and his young son named Chris. Chris put his hand out and Captain seemed interested, so I told his mother where I keep the horse treats and she went and got some for Chris to give to Captain.
Captain took them from Chris so gently! Then she put Chris down and he walked away from her. Captain followed the little guy and left the adults behind! It was so cute!
Remember how I was having a bit of a tough time with Captain? I read a book about communicating with animals, so finally one evening when I put Captain in his stall and he had eaten his oats, I had a mental talk with him. I told him that I did not want to be the chief horse, but that I am his mother. I asked him to remember his mother when he was a little colt and how he had to obey her because she took care of him. He would have to obey me and let me halter him because I need to take care of him like his mother did when he was little. I really think he got the message.
He has been wonderful since that night.
Update 12/28/09: Captain got a new friend, Dahlia!
