Marilee is a 15 year old black Percheron mare who also came to us as part of a large animal control seizure on February 6, 2008 from a property in King County. Mike Perry owned a carriage company and kept 18 horses on a mere 5 acres of mud with no shelter. After several complaints of abuse and malnutrition were filed with animal control, they conducted an investigation. They discovered one horse dead of starvation, causing an immediate seizure of the remaining horses. Marilee is a tentative mare who, although not mean, is a bit wary and will not seek out human attention. Fortunately, she has relaxed a lot over the time we have had her and is much more approachable than when she first arrived – but she still needs a lot of “TLC.” Marilee recently began training with Terri & Matney Cook and will start working on being more relaxed around people. It is our hope that with time and care, she will develop into a wonderful mare that will be ready to find her forever home. 10/1/08: Marilee has been adopted! She’ll be living with her new owner on an island in the San Juans. All of us here at PHH are so glad to see this deserving mare find the loving home that she so rightly deserves. 11/13/08: Jenifer just emailed to say that Marilee is settling into her new home extremely well. She is living on 40 acres with 8 other horses. Jennifer and Marilee will start training with Sus Kellogg, one of our favorite clinicians, in December.
2010- 4th Qtr Update
We received an update on Marilee! In the words of Jennifer…
I was able to ride her this year, even out of the round pen. We don’t do much of it though because I don’t take the time to work with her. She is in a herd of five still in the 40 acre pasture she has been in from the start. Another draft named Butch and she are good pals. When I come out to the pasture she follows me to the barn for her oats and grooming (she’s the only one in the herd who has a person come be with her). It’s a sweet routine how the other four follow her and stand back for he to go through the gate. She’s sweet, timid, connected but aloof. She allows one to scratch her favorite spot on her rump and then looks at you with a expression of, “Oh, I like that, see I’m not walking away, you lucky person”. Physically, she is well proportioned and runs with a beautiful gait. She gorgeous and she knows it! I’m so happy we are together; she is just what I wanted and she seems very happy too.
