Penny is one of six horses seized by Skagit County Animal Control in March 2010. All of the horses were severely underweight with rain rot, bad feet, and teeth.  Penny arrived with the added challenge to her health of being pregnant and delivered what seemed to be a healthy baby boy on April 28th. However, just over a week later, the colt was found immobile in the pasture. His heart was racing, his breathing unstable, and was seizing. The vet was called immediately and everything was done to save the precious foal. Tragically, the little one died, leaving Penny and all at PHH bereft and heartbroken. News of the loss was posted on Facebook and within hours four individuals called looking for a nurse mare. Penny, being the sweetheart that she is, stepped into another foal’s life who’d lost his mother at just two weeks of age. She’s currently with the foster family as she awaits her forever home.

August 2011 Update:

Penny has returned to the People Helping Horses facility.  She is currently awaiting a new foster home, or a new forever home as a companion horse.
