Red

Success Story

Red is an 18 year old sweet and gentle sorrel grade gelding. He came to us as part of a large animal control seizure on February 6, 2008 from a property in King County. Mike Perry owned a carriage company and kept 18 horses on a mere five acres of mud with no shelter. After several complaints of abuse and malnutrition were filed with animal control, they conducted an investigation. They discovered one horse dead of starvation, causing an immediate seizure of the remaining horses. Red is one of the poor angels who was rescued from that plight. He likes to be with people, but is still a bit head shy – something we are working on. After about a month of training, he is much more relaxed about his face but is still a bit jumpy if you make a sudden move. Red was started under saddle in July and we anticipate will be adopted by one of our dedicated staff – Laura Laney!

Update – September 12, 2008 Red has officially been adopted by Laura. When she first came to volunteer with People Helping Horses Red was the one that really caught her eye. After several months of working with him she made the decision to go ahead with the adoption. She has ridden him over jumps, in a trail and a cow clinic to determine what their specialty will be. Keep checking in to see what they will do next!

Update – December 23, 2008 We are still trying to figure out what we are really good at but for now we are going to focus on confidence building. Sus Kellogg, a clinician from Celebrate the Horse, came for a clinic at our barn in November and gave me some new insight on Red. Meghan Valenti, one of the trainers at the barn, follows the same training style so she is helping me continue what we started with Sus.

Update – October 12, 2009 We just finishe taking our third clinic with Sus Kellogg and it was so exciting for her to see how much he has changed in the last few months. Red and I have been working hard with Meghan for almost a year and a few months ago we also got some help from Dr. Suzan Seelye. The physical therapy we have been doing has been huge. I feel Red has improved more in the last 3 months than in the past year!
